Carbon monoxide is a gas you cannot see or smell. Breathing high levels of carbon monoxide can cause severe illness or death. Carbon monoxide can kill a person in minutes. On average, more than 20 people die each year from unintentional carbon monoxide poisoning in Washington State. Most carbon monoxide poisoning occurs in fall and winter months. You can prevent carbon monoxide poisoning.
