Immunizations are a safe and effective way to keep people of all ages from getting many serious, and sometimes deadly, diseases.
Vaccines strengthen your immune system. They help your body recognize and fight the viruses and bacteria that cause disease, without exposing you to the disease itself.
Immunizations protect you, and they also protect the community. They do this by reducing how much of the illness is circulating in the community. This “herd immunity” protects those who have weakened immune systems or are not fully immunized. People may not be fully immunized because of some medical conditions, because they are too young or too old, or for other reasons.
Why is immunization data important?
Immunization coverage data allows us to track communities' levels of protection against certain diseases. Consistent tracking over time allows us to compare levels of protection within communities. This helps us assess health and health outcomes. Immunization data helps us support underserved areas to help promote health and well-being for all.

What's Here
The Public Health Measure by County dashboard shows immunization coverage for Washington residents between 19 months and17 years of age. You can see coverage rates and trends from 2015 through 2023 by vaccination series completion, individual vaccine status, race and ethnicity, and county.
The HEDIS Immunization dashboards show data for those aged 6 months through 17 years by county and Accountable Communities of Health (ACH) region.
The data are collected in the Washington Immunization Information System (IIS). The IIS is the most complete source of medically verified immunization data for Washington State.
NOTE: We changed how we capture population data in 2018. Numbers for years prior to 2018 are not comparable to later years due to this change. Read more about the change in the Technical Notes below.
Learn About Public Health vs. HEDIS Measures
Public Health Measures and HEDIS are both ways to track the vaccination completion rates and status of different age groups.
Public Health Measures are used by states and the federal government to improve health and control the spread of vaccine-preventable disease in the general population.
The Healthcare Effectiveness Data and Information Set (HEDIS) tool is used by most U.S. health insurance plans. It measures quality of care and service for a broad range of health issues, including childhood and adolescent immunization status.
