Carbapenems are a class of powerful antibiotics considered the last line of defense against bacteria resistant to other antibiotics (Multi-Drug Resistant Organisms – MDROs). These dashboards summarize reports of carbapenemase-producing organisms (CPO) and Candida auris. Surveillance began in 2012 for CPO and in 2017 for C. auris. Targeted MDRO isolates are counted from any person diagnosed in-state or from Washington residents diagnosed out-of-state and reported to the department.

What's Here
The data for these dashboards comes from surveillance isolates submitted and tested through the Washington State Public Health Laboratory, as well as isolate reports from other states made to the Healthcare Associated Infections Program. This dashboard displays data reported since surveillance for the respective MDROs began and is updated monthly. Repeat isolates submitted from a single person are deduplicated.
How are cases counted?
Each unique genus/species/resistance gene combination is counted once for each case patient in the first year detected or reported in Washington. A person may have more than one type of targeted MDRO type counted.
