- Certification requirements

Applicants must complete a minimum of 108 hours of training through a state-approved program. Training must include 35 hours of classroom/theory, 33 hours of skills labs, and 40 hours of facility/clinical. Students who are in a licensed practical nursing or registered nursing program, and who have met the minimum requirement, also qualify. In addition, military medic or corpsman training may meet our requirements.
Applicants must pass the competency exam.
Work history (professional training and experience) is required if applicant is applying for endorsement from another state.
Verification of placement on a state OBRA (The 1997 Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Action) registry is required if applicant is applying for endorsement from another state.

Proof of completion of training requirements. Examination results will be sent directly to the Department of Health.
Applicants must list all states where they do or did hold credentials. This list must also include when the applicant has applied for a credential, even if a credential was not granted. The jurisdiction where the applicant is or was credentialed must complete and submit the verification form. Applicant sends form to jurisdiction for completion. The jurisdiction must send the completed form directly to the department.

If there is a positive answer to the professional liability claims history question, the applicant must send an explanation of the nature of the case, data and summary of care given, copies of the original complaint, and the settlement or final disposition. No formal training is required. Registered nursing assistants employed in a nursing home have four months to complete an approved training program and testing for certification.
