What is Lynch Syndrome?

Lynch syndrome is a hereditary condition that leads to increased risks for colorectal, endometrial, ovarian and gastric cancers, among others. It is estimated that up to 1 out of 279 individuals has Lynch syndrome but 98% are undiagnosed. Per that estimate, there are approximately 26,000 individuals with undiagnosed Lynch syndrome in Washington State.

A complete diagnosis including genetic testing is crucial not only for tailoring individual preventative treatment but also to give patients the vital risk information to share with their family members (a process known as cascade screening). They too may take action to prevent future Lynch syndrome-related cancers.

Cancer Genetic Clinic Locations and Hereditary Cancer Case Burden by County in Washington State (PDF)
To identify possible gaps in access to services, cancer cases meeting high-risk criteria for hereditary cancer syndromes were identified from one year of Washington State Cancer Registry data and counts per county mapped with Regional Genetic Clinics that provide cancer genetic services.
