Rules in Progress
The rules writing process is open to the public. The public is welcome to take part in helping us write rules. Rules are also known as regulations, Washington Administrative Code, or WAC. The rule-making process includes public notices and workshops, and usually a public hearing before a rule becomes final.

Current rules in progress
On December 3, 2013, the Department of Health filed a notice of possible rule-making Preproposal Statement of Inquiry (CR-101) with the code reviser's office, WSR 13-24-104.
The department has opened chapter 246-849 WAC – Ocularists to update and correct obsolete wording and references. We held a rule-making workshop on March 2, 2017, to gather comments about the proposal.
We've moved to the next rule-making phase by filing Proposed Rule Making (CR-102) with the code reviser's office, WSR 17-17-082. The proposed rules provide more clarity and easier readability, as well as establishing new requirements for tracking apprenticeship hours and setting a passing score on the written examination. A public rule adoption hearing is scheduled for October 4, 2017, at 1 p.m. at the following location:
Department of Health
Town Center 2, Room 158
111 Israel Rd. S.E.
Tumwater, WA
