What is it?
Haemophilus influenzae type B (Hib) disease is a severe bacterial infection that can cause meningitis (swelling of the covering of the brain and spinal cord); infections of the joints, skin, and blood; brain damage; and even death. Hib is most dangerous to children under five. It is spread by coughing and sneezing.
What can I do?
Hib vaccine is recommended for all children under five in the U.S., and it is usually given to infants starting at two months old. The Hib vaccine can be combined with other vaccines.
Is it safe?
Yes, Hib vaccine is safe. There is no known association between Hib vaccine and serious adverse events.
