The Internal Revenue Service requires a hospital recognized as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit entity to conduct a Community Health Needs Assessment (CHNA) every three years.
Community Health Improvement Services (CHIS) are hospital activities related to improving community needs that have been identified within the hospital’s Community Health Needs Assessment. The CHIS addendum details these activities. However, it does not detail every hospital effort or activity that addresses community needs. Questions about activities not reported on the CHIS addendum should be directed to the hospital.
Engrossed Second Substitute House Bill 1272 requires hospitals recognized as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit to submit to the Department of Health its Community Health Needs Assessment and Community Health Improvement Services Addendum.
Beginning in July 2022, hospitals are required to submit its CHNA every three years. Beginning with the 2023 fiscal year, each hospital must submit its CHIS addendum 120 days after the end of its fiscal year.
