HIV tests show whether an individual has HIV and are a normal part of health care. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends that everyone between the ages of 13 and 64 get tested for HIV at least once as part of regular health care and most health insurers cover the full cost at least once.
All pregnant women should get tested for HIV so that they can begin taking HIV medicines if they are HIV positive. Individuals with specific risk factors, are recommended to get tested quarterly or at least yearly.
Risk Factors that increase the risk of getting HIV include:
- Having vaginal or anal sex with someone who is HIV positive or whose HIV status you don't know;
- Having sex with multiple partners;
- Injecting drugs and sharing needles, syringes, or other drug equipment with others;
- Exchanging sex for money, drugs or housing;
- Having a sexually transmitted infection, hepatitis, or tuberculosis;
- Having sex with anyone who has any of these risk factors.
Know Your Status
In the United States 15% of people living with HIV do not know they have it. And nearly 40% of new HIV infections are transmitted by people who do know they have the virus. Getting tested for HIV is the only way to know if you have it.
People living with HIV who know their status can get HIV treatment (antiretroviral therapy, or ART) and remain healthy for many years. Seeing your doctor regularly, getting lab tests and taking your HIV medication as prescribed allows your viral load to become undetectable so the virus cannot be transmitted through sex.
Studies show that the sooner people start treatment, the more they benefit from ART. Use the anonymous HIV Risk Reduction Tool to learn more about your risks for getting or transmitting HIV and answers to other common HIV-related questions.
Confidentiality
Confidential testing means that your HIV test results will include your name and other identifying information, and the results will be included in your medical record. HIV-positive test results will be reported to local or state health departments to be counted in statistical reports. Health departments remove all personal information (including names and addresses) from HIV test results before sharing the information.
Where to Get Tested
Most health care providers and clinics provide HIV testing and counseling. Many organizations throughout the state offer HIV testing and counseling for free, or at a reduced cost for people who can't afford it, do not have health insurance, or don't have a health care provider.
The Office of Infectious Disease provides rapid HIV, laboratory-based testing, and HIV Self-Testing kits and training to the community testing programs listed below to increase access to HIV testing. The program information may be slightly different than listed so please reach out to the individual program for more information. Depending on the type of HIV test and the test results, individuals may need a follow up tests provided by a health care provider.
